Comprehensive Battery Testing and Replacement Services by The Engine Bay in Salisbury Plain

Car batteries are primarily lead-acid batteries designed to supply the starting power for petrol or diesel vehicles. They are relatively straightforward but must be kept in good condition to avoid failure. Our team at The Engine Bay can test your car battery to determine its health and recommend a replacement if necessary. With same-day service available, we ensure your car remains road-ready.

Truck batteries are typically larger and more robust, reflecting the greater power demands of larger engines and the electrical systems they support. These batteries often come in heavy-duty forms to withstand the additional strain of long hauls and extended usage. Regular testing and timely replacement are crucial to prevent unexpected breakdowns. The Engine Bay offers expert testing services to ascertain whether your truck battery requires attention.

Electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries, which differ significantly from traditional car and truck batteries. These batteries are designed for longevity and efficiency but require specialised knowledge for testing and replacement. At The Engine Bay, we have the expertise to handle EV battery needs, ensuring your electric vehicle runs smoothly. Please note that while most battery replacements are available same day, some specialist batteries may be subject to supply availability.

Proactive battery maintenance is vital to avoid being stranded, especially during the busy holiday season.

Regular testing can identify potential issues before they lead to vehicle breakdowns. A faulty battery can cause significant inconvenience, and a timely replacement can save both time and money.

At The Engine Bay, we offer thorough testing with every car service and expert advice on battery replacement, ensuring your vehicle is ready for any journey.

Fluids and other workings in your car can be effected by cold weather; such as coolants, oils and items such as glow plugs in diesel vehicles. Will you be driving safe this winter?

Here we share some of the work we have done and what we found, with our customers vehicles after they have been to other workshops without success.

The Engine Bay are expert automotive diagnostic technicians.

Our customer came into us after having their motor home at two different workshops. One didn't want to do the job and the other had no idea what the problem with the vehicle was. Here was our process for diagnosis and repair:

2010 Ford Transit Motorhome - Ignition Fault

There was an ignition fault with the vehicle, it wouldn't start.

The onboard ECU was checked for faults and a code was present indicating the cam and crank correlation was not correct.

Further testing found that the crank sensor had been damaged from hitting the crank shaft and the sensor mount bracket was extremely loose.

As this was a Motorhome, the vehicle had to be jacked up high enough to be able to work underneath it, as it wouldn't fit on the hoist.

The gearbox was removed and from there it was discovered that the crank angle sensor mount bracket was missing and that one of the 2 bolts was not in the bell housing (the bell housing is part of the transmission).

We supplied and fitted two new bolts with a new crank angle sensor and mounting bracket.

The gearbox was then reassembled to the engine and the fault codes were cleared.

The customers were thrilled to finally have their motor home running and requested that we service it and install a GPS unit that was supplied by the customer.

These diagnostics can take days and sometimes weeks in order to prove a fault. Different tests need to be performed on some faults. Without being 100% accurate and sure of the issue, money could be spent on the wrong repairs, not solving the problem.

Here was our process for diagnosis and repair:

2010 Nissan Navara D40 - Engine cutting out

Fault - The engine was cutting out while the customer was driving.

The onboard ECU was checked for fault codes and was clear.

To diagnose, several tests needed to be performed.

The vehicle was driven with a clear hose on the outlet of the fuel filter assembly. On inspection, a large amount of air in the fuel was evident when the engine cut out.

The clear tube was then connected to the inlet of the fuel filter assembly and test driven. No air was found at the inlet while driving it.

From there, the fuel filter and the o ring was replaced at the water sensor and the vehicle was again driven to monitor. Air was still evident on the outlet of the fuel filter assembly .

This lead to a new Fuel filter primer pump being supplied and fitted and driven once again to monitor. No air was in the clear tube and the engine was not cutting out.

The clear tube was replaced with a new fuel hose before returning the vehicle to a happy customer.

2014 Holden Cruze - Intermittent Engine Light On

Fault - the engine light was coming on intermittently.

The onboard ecu was checked for fault codes. A fault code was present for the engine running lean. This is an excessive amount of air in the engine and can potentially lead to engine damage if not diagnosed.

Further testing found there was an excessive vacuum in the engine crank case. It was suspected that the pcv valve was faulty due to it being jammed open ( pcv- positive crankcase ventilation).

The pcv is part of the rocker cover ( rocker cover protects the inner moving parts of the engine and prevents debris from entering) and therefore the rocker cover needed to be replaced.

The vehicle was test driven and monitored before returning to the customer.

At no time is this an issue you should be having with your vehicle. Your ability to stop effectively is crucial.

The Jeep came in for a service and  65 point safety inspection. The customer mentioned that the brakes lock when applied and made a metal on metal sound.

Upon inspection, the fault was found with the left had rear brake adjuster cable had broken and had damaged the brake shoes and the drums.

We supplied and fitted new brakes and drums. Bled and adjusted the brakes.

Now the customer can rest assured that they are driving safely on the roads with real stopping potential.

Are you keen on ensuring your vehicle remains safe and dependable?

At The Engine Bay a car service encompasses three fundamental elements:

A comprehensive 65-Point Vehicle Inspection report.

Preventative maintenance aimed at reliability and cost-efficiency.

Assuming the identified areas are attended to and rectified, regularly servicing your vehicle with a skilled and professional mechanic ensures that your car is thoroughly inspected and maintained in its optimal condition. Servicing your vehicle at consistent intervals with The Engine Bay facilitates the following:

Identifying issues before they become hazardous - Brakes are merely one component that necessitates regular checking to ensure your safety and that of others. Numerous other elements, such as tyres, belts, steering, suspension, and shock absorbers, also contribute significantly to the safety and reliability of your vehicle.

Preventing engine oil sludge - It's crucial to replace engine oil before its lubricating properties diminish excessively due to time, contamination, and use.

Early detection of sludge accumulation - Sludge build-up in engine oil galleries, often caused by infrequent oil changes, is a primary factor in premature engine wear.

Providing clarity through the 65-Point Inspection - This helps identify components that are wearing out so they can be replaced before they fail, thus avoiding inconvenience and additional expenses.

The most appropriate service interval for your vehicle depends on various factors, including the type of vehicle, its age, and the conditions under which it is driven. Generally, we recommend a service interval of 5000 kilometres or six months.

At The Engine Bay, our team possesses the expertise and knowledge required to service your passenger and family car, as well as light trucks, diesel vehicles, and trailers. Our experienced team is readily available to address any concerns you may have regarding your vehicle.

We provide you with reliable car servicing and the assurance that the mechanic working on your vehicle is fully trained. Additionally, we are RAA approved, offering an added layer of trust and security.

In conclusion, regular servicing is paramount in ensuring that your vehicle remains in its best possible condition, guaranteeing safety, reliability, and cost savings over time.
